Sengoku is a 44 track score for feudal Japanese fantasy games: a mountain shrine, the high road through a province at war, a village under curfew, the bamboo grove by moonlight, the castle walls and the daimyo's court, the temples and the graves, nine fights from the first ronin to the last castle, and the cues a game fires all day.

Five notes, every part. Every track is in one of two Japanese pentatonic scales. 38 are in hirajoshi (1, 2, flat 3, 5, flat 6), which holds two semitones in every octave; 6 are in ryo (1, 2, 3, 5, 6) for the mountain shrine, the lantern hall, the ending and the rest, victory and level up cues. Checked on the shipped MIDI: no part of any track, not the bass, not the chords, not an inner line, not the drum, plays a note outside its scale (0 found), and the leads of the hirajoshi tracks move by one of its two semitones 1238 times. Run the same check over the other 28 albums in this studio's catalogue, 1125 tracks: 16 tracks pass it and no album passes it on every track.

A breath inside every loop. Every one of the 35 full pieces swings from near silence to full force inside the part that loops, measured bar by bar between the LOOPSTART and LOOPLENGTH tags of the shipped OGG: at least 29.2 dB between the quietest and the loudest bar on every track, and no quiet bar below -60 dB. A taiko part enters only in the swell, on 12 tracks including every fight, 1212 hits in all. This is the same grammar as our album Ashen Realm, in a new setting.

What plays what. General MIDI has its own shakuhachi, koto, shamisen and taiko sounds and they play under those names. It has no hichiriki, sho, shinobue or temple bell, so those parts are played on the oboe, the reed organ, the flute and tubular bells. The Readme lists every one. If you own the real instruments as samples, load the MIDI into them.

What is in it. 35 full pieces and 9 short cues, 59:58 of music. The shrine: Sengoku, The Mountain Shrine and The Lantern Hall. The province at war: The High Road, A Village Under Curfew, Rice Fields in the Rain, The Bamboo Grove, The Grove by Moonlight, The Flooded Paddies, Fireflies on the Marsh, The Castle Walls, The Burned Watchtower, The Snow Pass and The Highlands at Night. The castle: The Daimyo's Court, The Great Hall at Midnight and Beneath the Keep. The temples, the graves and the deep places: The Temple of the Bell, The Stone Garden, The Sutra Library, The Graveyard of Lanterns, The Burial Mound, The Gold Mine and Mist on the Mountain Lake. The fights: Ronin, The Spear Line, The Gate Captain, The Oni of the Pass, Steel in the Rain, The Burning Temple, The Warlord Unmasked, The Last Castle and Against a Thousand Spears. After: The Blossoms Fall and The Wanderer's Road. Cues: Victory at Dawn, The Blade Falls, Rest at the Shrine, Strength of the Clan, A Scroll Recovered, Something Waits in the Keep, A New Province, Shinobi! and The Conch Sounds.

What you get. 44 OGG files, 35 of them with sample accurate LOOPSTART and LOOPLENGTH tags, which is what RPG Maker MV and MZ read. 44 editable .mid sources. A Readme with per engine import notes, the proof reports, and a royalty free commercial licence.

One family of 5 cells. Blossom, Steel, Moon, Banner and Bell. Blossom climbs a third and ends a fifth higher, and opens the title, the shrine and the ending; Steel opens a fifth straight up and opens every fight; Moon begins by falling, through the semitone from the flat sixth to the fifth; Banner climbs two single steps for the province at war; Bell falls a third twice for the temples and the dead. 1969 statements and fragments of those cells across the album, counted by the harness in the finished MIDI.

Gate results. 782 theory checks and 501 audio checks, 0 failed, and the reports ship inside the download. They say the music is correctly written, rendered and tagged. They are not a claim about taste, which is what the free tracks are for.

Three full tracks are free on this page, with their MIDI: Sengoku, the title theme, then Ronin, a battle, and The Oni of the Pass, the boss.

An honest note on the style. This is a fantasy game score written in Japanese scales and in the idiom of the instruments games associate with feudal Japan. It is not a recording of traditional Japanese music and does not claim to be. The renders are a General MIDI reference render through a conventional soundfont. The composition system is AI written code and no generative audio model is used anywhere.
