Embercrown - A 2A03 NES JRPG Music Pack - 43 Tracks
A downloadable asset pack
Embercrown is a 43 track JRPG score written to the NES sound chip's pitched budget: two pulse channels and a triangle. Not a modern arrangement with square wave patches on top. Three voices, and never more than three notes sounding at once, in every one of the 43 tracks.
The triangle cannot change its volume. That is the constraint the whole record is built on. A pulse channel has a volume envelope and can swell, accent and duck under a melody. The 2A03 triangle has none: it is on at one level or it is off. So every bass note in this pack is the same instrument at the same velocity, all 43 tracks, and everything the bass appears to do dynamically is done with register and rhythm instead. You can check that yourself in about ten seconds: open any .mid and look at the bass track.
What you get. 43 OGG files with sample accurate LOOPSTART and LOOPLENGTH tags, which is exactly what RPG Maker MV and MZ read. 43 editable .mid sources, so you can re-voice, re-tempo or pull out a single line. A CHANNEL_MAP.md that tells you, per track, which MIDI track is Pulse 1, which is Pulse 2, and what Pulse 2 is doing. Both proof reports. A royalty free commercial licence.
The slots a JRPG actually needs. Four towns and a night theme. Five field and overworld cues. Forest, two caves, a marsh. Three dungeons, a ruin and a crypt. A court and a great hall. Inn, shop, smithy, chantry. Sea and open water. Three grades of battle, two bosses and a final. A sorrow cue and an ending. Eight stingers: victory, defeat, level up, item, discovery, encounter, fanfare and alert.
One family of five cells. Crown climbs and never closes. Ember is Crown turned upside down and is the dark half of the record. Road is Crown compressed until it moves by step. Bell is Crown opened out and is the only cell that arrives. Iron is Crown squared off, for the fights. 640 statements of those five across the album, counted by the harness in the finished MIDI rather than asserted here.
The noise and DPCM channels are deliberately empty. That is where drums live on real hardware. Faking percussion on a pitched channel would break the budget this record is written to, and leaving those channels alone means your own sound effects are not fighting the music for them. The Readme says so in those words.
Checked, not asserted. 766 theory checks and 492 audio checks, 0 failed, and both reports ship inside the download. Key membership, resolving progressions, voice leading, instrument range, melodic singability, loop seam continuity, no clipping, loop tags read back out of the shipped bytes. Those numbers say the music is correctly written, rendered and tagged. They are not a claim about taste, which is what the two free tracks are for.
Two full tracks are free on this page, with their MIDI: the title theme and the final battle. That is the constraint at rest and the constraint under load. Judge the rest from them.
The renders are a General MIDI reference render through a conventional soundfont. They are not chip emulation and this pack does not claim to be. The composition system is AI written code and no generative audio model is used anywhere.
