Wayfarer - JRPG Overworld & Travel Music Pack - 42 Tracks

One road, 42 ways. All 42 tracks grow from five notes: a leap up a fifth to the horizon, two steps back down, and a lift. The world map states it plainly, the horses and the caravan hammer a repeated note in front of it, the long road fills the fifth in by steps, the weather drops it in thirds, the rests slow it into a rock, and only one cell, Home, is ever allowed to land on the tonic. You hear it in the title, the homecoming and the journey's end, and nowhere else.

The open road is major and the dark road is minor. 28 tracks sit in a major mode and 14 in a minor one, and the split follows the journey: day, travel and arrival in one, night, storm, border and war in the other. The Readme lists the key and mode of every track so you can check it.

Organised by the journey, not by biome. Five views of the world map (first sight, the wide world, the world changed, the world at peace, the map at night). The ways of travelling: two horseback cues, two caravans, two river barges, three airship cues and a quick mount. The phases of the road: setting out, the crossroads, two long road montages, two for the mountain pass, two at the border, two arrivals and a homecoming. The conditions: cloudburst, night ride, daybreak, mist and two for the war road. Two wayside rests, a title, a journey's end, two ambient beds and four cues (new region, vehicle, milestone, rest).

The ensemble is the travelling band of a golden age overworld score: horn and trumpet for the horizon, flute, oboe, clarinet, recorder and ocarina for the road, nylon guitar and dulcimer for the wayside, strings bowed and plucked, harp, timpani and choirs. 30 instruments across the record, and no drum kit anywhere; the pulse of the horses is carried by pizzicato, timpani and a driving bass.

About the sound, stated plainly. "JRPG overworld" describes the writing and the ensemble. The .ogg files are rendered from the MIDI through a General MIDI soundfont (GeneralUser GS, whose licence permits selling recordings made with it); they are not a console sound chip. The .mid files are yours to run through your own sampler.

Hear it before you buy it. Two full tracks with their MIDI are free on this page: The First Fields, the road stated plainly on the flute, and The Airship Lifts, the same five notes on the trumpet as the airship leaves the ground. If you cannot hear that those are the same shape, do not buy the other 40.

What is not claimed. The 1,248 checks establish that every track is correctly written, rendered and tagged. They are not a claim about taste. The composition system is AI written code; the themes are written note by note in its source and developed by that code, then rendered through a conventional synth. No generative audio model is used anywhere.
