Hoist is an RPG Maker MZ plugin for Zelda style pick up and throw, with lift, carry and throw poses in all 4 facings made from your own walking sprites. Three plugin files and eight sample objects, commercial use with no royalty. Read the documentation before you buy.

A knight lifts a clay pot overhead, walks left and back with it held up, then throws it at a straw training dummy; the pot arcs over its shadow, shatters, and knocks the dummy flat

These pictures use our own knight, our own objects and a yard painted in code. On your map the poses are made from your own sheets.

RPG Maker users have asked for lift sprites since at least 2014, and the free pick up and throw plugins move the object while the hero stands as before: buyers on their pages say they drew their own lift sprites. Hoist draws them for you.

What you get

  • Three poses for each walking sheet, in all 4 facings: a squat that reaches for the object, a carry walk with both hands under it and the legs still stepping, and the throw. Made when the sheet loads, from its own arms and colours.
  • Any event can be lifted with the note tag <hoist>: a tile from your tileset or a character sheet frame.
  • The throw arcs from overhead over a shadow, up to 3 tiles by default, stops short of walls and splashes into water.
  • Where it lands it breaks into pieces of its own picture, or lands whole with <hoist: keep>. A <hoist target> it hits gets a self switch, so its next page can react: the dummy here falls over.
  • With Smithereens installed, the object breaks the way its material would.
  • 8 sample objects: pot, urn, crate, barrel, rock, bush, sack and a training dummy.

Six engine frames of one throw: squat and reach, raise it, carry it, throw, in the air over its shadow, and the pot breaking on the dummy

How it runs

The pose sheets are drawn once, when the player's sheet loads. Measured in the real engine on a loop of lift, carry, throw and break: 10.1 draw calls a frame, against 10 with nothing carried, and no texture uploads. Keyboard, gamepad, mouse and touch all work; a save taken mid throw loads back mid throw.

Twelve walking sheets in three styles, each shown in the carry pose facing down and facing right with a clay pot held overhead

Compatibility: the question you actually have

Tested against RPG Maker MZ with the stock scripts unmodified, verified by running the plugin in the real engine rather than only in tests.

Plugin Manager order: PostureCore.js, HoistCore.js, Hoist.js. Any order works, and one PostureCore.js serves Hoist, Posture and Embrace together.

Core methods extended: 16 by saved-original prototype extension, none replaced. The full list is in the guide.

Tested with Smithereens installed beside it. Untested: pixel movement, VisuStella Events & Movement Core, and plugins that swap the player's sprite sheet, which Hoist does while carrying.

Game_Event gets its own updateJump and jumpHeight, which run the engine's versions for every event Hoist has not thrown.

From the same studio: Smithereens, pots and crates that break by material. Posture, sit and sleep poses from your sheets. Ajar, drawers and lids that open. Timber, trees you can cut down.

Code written with AI assistance. Every character, object and ground in these pictures is our own and was made with AI assistance; every lift, carry and throw pose on them is drawn by the plugin from the character's walking sheet.
