Ajar - Searchable Furniture for RPG Maker MZ: Drawers, Lids, Sacks and Shelves in Your Own Tileset Open
A downloadable asset pack
Ajar is a 2 file RPG Maker MZ plugin that makes the drawers, barrels, jars, sacks and shelves in your own tileset open when searched. Royalty free in commercial games, with no art files to draw.

Every moving pixel is cut from the furniture tile you painted. What the event gives rises out of the opening as its own icon.
What is inside
2 plugin files · 4 ways to open · 5 plugin commands · raw readable JavaScript · no art files · one note per event: <ajar: drawer>
- Drawer (dressers, desks, nightstands, cabinets): Ajar finds the drawer fronts and pulls one out toward you.
<ajar: drawer 2>picks another and<ajar: drawer all>opens them in turn - Lid (barrels, crates, jars, pots, urns, baskets, boxes): the lid lifts, tips and settles askew on the rim
- Sack (sacks, bags, pouches): the gathered top sinks into a collar round a dark mouth
- Shelf (bookshelves, bookcases): one book slides out and two lean into the gap
- The event's own commands run as always, so Show Text, Change Items or a loot plugin all work. A page that gives nothing shakes out a little dust
- Searched pieces rest ajar. The record is saved with the game and survives leaving the map
- Plugin commands: Search, Open, Close, Forget Search for a stash that refills, and Show Found Icon for loot plugins

Four ways to open, and the found item rises out.

Before and after: the player can see which pieces they have already been through.

Five tilesets, one plugin. Each moving part was found from the piece's own pixels.
The pictures use Ajar's own test furniture and our Verdant 07, Verdant 73, Hearthhands 01 and Sigilcast 01 packs, sold separately. Ajar ships no art and works on yours.
Works with
RPG Maker MZ with the stock scripts unmodified, verified by running the plugin in the real engine. The shipped zip was installed into a blank MZ project and played from the title screen, including a save and load.
Plugin Manager order:
AjarCore.js: derives how your own furniture tiles open (drawers, lids, sacks, shelves). Put it above AjarAjar.js: the drawers, barrels, jars, sacks and shelves in your own tileset open when searched, cut from their own pixels
Core methods extended, 7 by saved original prototype extension, none replaced: Game_Event.prototype.setupPageSettings, Game_Event.prototype.start, Game_Event.prototype.update, Spriteset_Map.prototype.createCharacters, Spriteset_Map.prototype.update, Sprite_Character.prototype.updateBitmap, Sprite_Character.prototype.updateFrame.
Because nothing is clobbered, Ajar co-exists with other plugins that patch the same seams, including large suites. An event that carries <threshold> or <smash> belongs to that plugin and Ajar leaves it alone.
Scope
- What is found is your event's business, since Ajar decides nothing about loot
- The inside of a drawer or a jar is darkness, and the found item rises out of it
- Treasure chests and hinged doors are out of scope. Cupboard and wardrobe doors belong to Threshold
- A piece is an event with a tile graphic, as in stock MZ, and a tile painted on the map layers stays still
- The shelf kind is drawn for books: on a shelf of bottles the item that tips out shows a book's pale page edge on top
Licence and how it was made
Use it in as many games as you like, commercial or free, with no royalties, and modify the source for your own projects. Do not resell or share the plugin files themselves, or publish the source. Full terms are in LICENSE.txt.
The code was written with AI tools and tested in the engine. Images on this page come from the product and from AI generated art. No sounds or narrative text ship with it.
