Gravity is not a button here, and it is not yours. The room falls toward whichever of its four wall tanks is heaviest. All you control is where the water goes.

Twenty-four sealed machine chambers. Turn a valve wheel, fit a length of pipe, open a drain cock, and the chamber tips a quarter turn under you. You fall with it, and when it settles, the wall you were standing beside is the floor you are standing on. Reach the hatch and the next chamber is waiting.

What is in the machine room

  • Water as ballast. Every wall tank holds a real volume of water, and the heaviest wall is down. Moving water from one tank to another is how you turn the room.
  • Four chapters, four fittings. The valve wheel, the elbow, the check valve and the accumulator. Each chapter adds one piece to your kit and spends six chambers on what it does to the rest.
  • The boiler. It builds pressure while you work, and the relief whistle tells you when that is about to matter.
  • Your breath. A chamber can flood faster than you climb, and the air gauge is counting.
  • Hot floors and scalding steam in the later chapters, where the fall you make is also the ground you land on.

Dying does not cost you the game

Your progress is saved at every chamber. Dying puts you back at the start of the chamber you are in, never at the start of the game, and closing the tab keeps your place.

Playing it

Keyboard: arrows or A and D to walk · Up, W or Space to jump · E, S or Down to turn a wheel, fit a piece or open a cock · R resets the chamber · Esc or P pauses · H is the how-to page · M is sound.

Touchscreen: a thumb pad appears in the chamber. Hold a phone upright and the game lays itself out again for a portrait screen, with bigger type and a proper control deck, rather than squeezing the landscape layout.

Free, and made by us

Free to play in the browser, nothing to install and nothing to sign up for. Code, graphics and text are AI generated. The sound is not: every effect and the music loop are synthesised from oscillators and noise by code we wrote. The type is Bungee and IBM Plex Sans Condensed, which ship inside the build under the SIL Open Font Licence 1.1. The source ships raw and readable.

If you enjoy it, following the studio is the single most useful thing you can do. This track is free precisely so it can find an audience.
